area of 1.66 million square kilometers and takes up one sixth of
China¡¯s total land.

4. Xinjiang has the largest Basin in China, that is the Tarim Basin.
The length of the Basin is 1500 kilometers from east to west, the
width is 800 kilometers from north to south, and the area is 700,000
square kilometers. It is also the largest inland basin in the world.
5. Xinjiang has the largest desert in China, that is Takalamakan
Deseert. The desert occupies an area of 324,000 square kilometers,
and takes up 22% of Xinjiang¡¯s total land. It is also the second
largest desert in the world.
6. Xinjiang has the largest inland fresh water lake in China, that
is Bosten Lake. The lake is 998 square kilometers in area, and the
deepest point of the lake is 17 meters.
7. Xinjiang has the highest winter ice rink in China, that is the
Heavenly Lake. The altitude of the lake is 1,928 meters above sea
level. In recent years athletes of winter sports from all over China
meet here to train and to compete here.
8. Xinjiang has the longest inland river in China, that is the Tarim
River. Its length is 2179 kilometers, and the fourth longest river
in China.
9. Xinjiang has the river flow to Artic Ocean which is unique in
China,that is the Erchis River in north part of Xinjiang.
10. Xinjiang has the biggest glacier in China, that is Insugaiti
Glacier on the north side of K2 in the Kalakunram Mountains. .It
is 30 kilometers long, and the tongue of the glacier is 4200 meters.
11. Xinjiang is the province in China with the most mountains open
for foreigners. Since 1985, there are 11 peaks opened to foreigners,
among them is the 8611 meter peak, K2, the second highest in the
world.
12. Xinjiang has the lowest place in China, which is the Aidel Lake
in Turpan. The lowest point of that place is 154.43 meters below
sea level, and it is also the second lowest point in the world.
13. Xinjiang has the hottest place in China, that is the Turpan
basin. In 1975, the highest temprature of air measured 49.6 degree
centigrade, while the ground temperature reached 82.3 degrees centigrade.
14. Xinjiang has the least rainfall place in China, that is Toksun
County in the Turpan Basin. There are only 6 rainfall days yearly,
and the average rainfall yearly is 3.9 millimeters, in the year
1968 only 0.5 millimeters.
15. Xinjiang has the driest place in China, that is the Turpan County.
The place holds a record of 299 days without any rainfall. Hence
it has been enjoying the fame of the Fire Continent since the Ming
Dynasty.
16. Xinjiang has the record holder in terms of snowfall, that is
Yining city in west of Xinjiang. On 27th of January 1969, the snow
accumulated to 94 millimeters.
